Writing a Text

writing-a-text

I’m not the best person to talk about lyrics writing. For my first songs, I hired a lyricist and in all the songs composed by Fabio Colombo he was him to deal with the text. Despite this, at a certain point I was forced to write lyrics and unexpectedly I found myself at ease.

EVERYBODY HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

I believe this to be the ideal precondition: no matter how adventurous your life has been or how many experiences you have lived, if you are a celebrity or a perfect ” lay man” but you are an individual and your existence gives you the right to show your feelings and your opinions. Never forget it and do not be afraid of expressing yourself.

NEVER LOOK FOR SENSATIONAL TOPICS

There’s no need to tell impossible stories or try to impress with quips and jokes. Be yourself and just write what comes up into your mind. Especially in songs, the first sentences, those that remain more easily in the listeners mind, often speak about trivial topics: the weather and the sun, sand and sea and of course love, so do not invent anything because you everything you need is ready to be used.

WRITE THE FIRST THING THAT COMES UP INTO YOUR MIND

One consequence of the abovementioned is this: let yourself be guided by your instincts and do not be afraid of following the much-quoted “inspiration”. If what comes up to your mind seems senseless, it does not matter. One reason that gives meaning to the speech will be probably found later on whereas if you do not listen now to your “inner voice” then probably you won’t have any other occasion to transcribe the content and this important opportunity will be lost. The lure here is to psychoanalysis where the first sentence or association is the correct one.

RHYMES ARE NOT NECESSARY

If you want to write your rhyming verses go ahead on condition that this does not limit your imagination. Especially avoid any stretching. If you have to write trivialities to find a rhyme, in this case no doubt, much better to write freely without seeking forced rhymes.

TRY TO BE ORIGINAL

It seems a contradiction to what said above but actually if you follow your instinct something original will definitely come out. No need to make sense of everything you write. It may sound predictable and this is the worst thing in a text. If you leave many possibilities of interpretation to your literary compositions you will enrich and embellish the text giving depth and substance to it. Sometimes you will find out by yourself what you intended to write. It happens to me: I sometimes start a sentence with a meaning and end it in a different perspective.

DO IT FOR YOU

Do not hope to become a writer or a successful composer. Probably, indeed certainly, it will not happen. So why deceiving yourself? Better to make it clear that what you are doing is just for your own satisfaction and everything else that will come in addition to this will be something for free.
